Japanese BOP: Record Foreign Bond Purchases by Pension Funds

  • Japanese investors returned to being net buyers of foreign securities in January after a decelerating pace of foreign purchase over H2 2019 and modest net repatriation flows in December. 
  • The net outflows by Japanese investors were driven by record purchases of long-term foreign debt by pensions funds, while lifers remained net sellers of foreign long-term securities for a third consecutive month and retail investor outflows continued their accelerating trend.
